Understanding the 7 Laws of Karma: A Beginner's Guide

Karma! Much like a mystical word, yes? But its human connection is as real and vivid as any materialistic object of this world. Yet, if you try to chase the spiritual meaning of karma, you might end up in a complex ideology that neither offers you a clear vision nor inspires you to live through it. So, we better leave it up to Saints and Monks. For us, the philosophy of Karma is simplest when we understand them with its 7 laws.

In this Blog, we will learn about how the law of Karma works, the 7 golden laws of Karma, and how we can use this wisdom in auditing our lives to make them successful and countable.

Understanding the 7 Laws of Karma: A Beginner's Guide

Decoding Karma

Hinduism says karma is the relationship between a person’s mental or physical action and the consequences following that action. This means, do good and get the good in return, and do bad and have the same back!

Here, these Karma quotes are no less in simply decoding its meaning even further, and there are many more. But these two amongst them, "What goes around comes around" and "You reap what you sow", explain almost everything.

But, there is one Karmic principle that often troubles us in its complete understanding; where despite having a positive Karmic account, the one, in return receives the painful consequences while the one with a negative Karmic account relishes in joy!

For example, a newborn with no karmic account at all takes birth with a hole in his heart, How? A Prince (Lord Rama) is thrown into exile and his wife gets her character judged despite their good Karma! Why? Here, Karma acts paradoxically, and there are countless examples to support this. The exact opposite of the earlier mention!

The Karmic Paradox
But in what way is this explicable? What's wrong with Karma! Actually, nothing! You still reap what you sow.

BK Shivani, a practitioner and a teacher of Rajyoga Meditation strongly emphasizes the fact that Karma and Sacraments are derived not only from present life but also we carry them from our previous life.

So, the reward (good or bad) we receive in the present life is the result of the actions we performed in the current as well as previous life.

Also, mind well that Karma, unlike in every equation doesn't follow the arithmetic rule of subtraction, but it follows the rule of addition. Our bad Karma just don't subtract from our good Karma, no!

Out of our 100% deeds, if 99% are good and even 1% is bad, then this 1% doesn't subtract from 99%. We shall still receive the rewards of our 99% good deeds and 1% bad deeds.

Here, there is Plus (Good deeds) - Minus (Bad deeds) ≠ Good rewards.

Interesting, isn't it?

Well, let's not dig much deeper into the philosophy of Karma and simply understand it with its 7 laws.

#1 The Great Law

"Whatever one puts out into the Universe will come back to them".

We are nothing but a small bundle of energy wandering and passing our time in this huge universe, and constantly, we radiate and absorb the energy even if we are sleeping, working, or thinking. The great Law tries to explain the same fundament using the concept of our energy exchange.

It says, not only physical (Action) but also the tiniest mental sentiment (Thought) too, is energy. The thought of hurting someone, and in reality hurting someone with our hands are both forms of energy- thinking is not excluded here.

Cultivate the habit to radiate love, happiness, kindness, and peace in order to receive them back.

What goes around comes around!
Or, radiate hurt, hate, pain, and abuse, and be ready to receive the same back.

☮Words of wisdom: Beware of what you actually put out into the universe, you assuredly are going to get them all back. Guaranteed!

#2 The Law of Creation

"Life does not happen by itself, we need to make it happen".

Taking birth, just surviving, and living actually, by all means, are three different forms of life. Some just take birth and die, some only survive, while some make an inspiring living out of it.

We often assume life to bloom out of us effortlessly since we think it is natural, but this law firmly advocates the importance of "doing" over just expecting.

Sitting idly at home takes us nowhere but working out certainly does. Dreaming of achieving something undoubtedly increases our chances of success, but only if we take the first step. So what we need is action and not just motion (An idea of doing).

The internet is flooded with such examples who belonged to rugs but have created their own riches by adopting this law.

Create a pot at least, you already have the clay

APJ Abdul Kalam, Patricia Narayan, Captain Gopinath, and many more have made it happen simply by sticking to the rule of "doing".

Words of wisdom: Don't just survive, Live!

#3 The Law of Humility

"One must accept something in order to change it".

In simpler terms, it tells us to stay honest and humble with ourselves and never blame anyone for what we are right now. Accept that our current reality is the outcome of our past actions. It's only you and no one else!

The point is, without admitting to our faults, mistakes, and failures, change is impossible. We will always be inclined towards our perceptions and won't be able to see or push the change.

Change is in front of you

Unless we admit to our anger peace is not possible!

So, reflect on where you are in life, then work for what you wish for!

Words of wisdom: Accept first, change after

#4 The Law of Growth

"When we change ourselves, our lives follow suit and change too"

In order to grow, we must let go of control! Yes, you read it correctly. We must stop controlling the outer world and start focusing on things that are in our control only. Remember, things will only change if we let them change.

As very subtly put that how can we grow when we exploit our energy in controlling others! This is something like, "You want your car to accelerate but don't want to release the brake".

The second thing to understand is, Growth starts from within, the inner state, which has the immense power to influence the surrounding. Nothing shall grow and change if we only work on external factors.

Grow freely without controlling others
Grow by changing thoughts, words, and actions, and life will follow suit and change too.

Words of wisdom: "We can't control the flood while building the wall alongside! Grow the wall and the flood will stop automatically!"

#5 The Law of Responsibility

"We must take responsibility for what is in our lives".

Ever since we held the wisdom, one thing has always been with us, and that is the very thing that makes our lives or ruins them all the way. We call it "Choice".

Our current life is all about the choices we made or will make in the future. Precisely, we are the product of our choices. So, admit it.

The law advocates that one must own the responsibility for his/her life because what happens to you is because of you. This eliminates the opportunity for you to look outward to find the cause of your problems.

Choice is everything
For example, your perfectly fit body is because you chose to wake up with the alarm and not preferred on snoozing it infinitely.

Words of wisdom: "We mirror what surrounds us, and what surrounds us mirrors us".

#6 The Law of Connection

"The past, the present, the future, they are all connected".

Be aware that nothing in the universe is placed randomly. Everything here is connected all the time. No matter if it is a thought, word, action, or object of minuscule importance, just put it into the flow. Because each step leads to the next step, and so forth and so on.

Not the first, second, or last step is important. All the steps are important since everything is connected.

Our current accomplishment was connected to a step we took and the next step will follow the merits of this accomplishment.

We can simply understand this with the example of an author; his current bestseller was because he started writing, and this bestseller will ascertain his next venture to be a hit.

An iron shackle
Everything is connected!
Remember, a step taken is the distance we cut, and this doesn't go unrewarded. The more steps we take, the more we cover!

Word of wisdom: Just take a step, the magnitude does not matter.

#7 The Law of Focus/ Force

"Focus on one thing at a time".

The law preaches the importance of singular focus and its unmatchable outcomes.

When we focus on one thing only, all our energy gets navigated toward the best possible outcomes since the projection of our energy is set straight with no deviation.

It's like an archery game; the more you focus, the better you hit the target!

But when we multitask, our energy divides and the outcome suffers.

We can never think of two things at a time, can we? In my guess, No. Then how can we perform two tasks at a time with 100% conviction and achieve the best?

Focusing on spirituality constantly decreases the chances of negative thoughts like greed, lust, anger, and envy, but when you blend it with the judgmental eye, the focus wavers.

Words of wisdom: Multitask only when you focus on positive attributes like happiness, peace, kindness, and love.

A Tale of 12 Laws

Fundamentally there are 12 laws of Karma in total, but since this is a beginner's guide, we prefer it to be short and concise. However if one wants to know more he/she can follow the highlighted link here.

So, why should we bother about Karma?

Because our every word, thought, or action is the energy that we send out in the universe which is our Karma, and every Karma has a consequence which we call destiny.

Therefore, to create a beautiful destiny we must constantly audit our actions and take charge of it.

Remember, Karma is unforgiving, merciless, but JUST!
